Experience: Global Engineering Class

Duration: Fall Semester 2020 (15 weeks. Approximately 135 hours)

Description: This class involves working with students from Portugal to solve and work together on different engineering projects. This class would potentially help develop global competencies that are important for the 21st century.

Reflection: This experience has taught me to be more culturally aware. Given that this course allows you to interact with students from Portugal and actually work on very interesting and challenging assignments. This experience has taught me to be more conscious of other people’s perspectives that may vary from my own. It has allowed me to develop my interpersonal skills. More specifically, to listen more, and clearly communicate during problem-solving.
We are entering a world that is becoming more interconnected. This means that this experience is valuable because working with engineering teams around the world is and will become more common. I came to realize that future engineers should not only have great technical skills but also, the ability to interact and work well with people from other cultures in order to reach a common goal.

Relation to Grand Challenge Engineer Better Medicine:
The projects in the course will require teamwork and cultural awareness to better assess engineering market assessments of a certain product or material in a specific country. The projects are not really related to my grand challenge. However, this course will surely provide skills that could serve to better cope with global and medical-related engineering projects, since we are living in an interconnected society. Skills such as leadership, collaboration, and communication in a multicultural team are developed.

Program-wide learning: This experience will greatly serve to increase teamwork skills, not only with people that share a similar environment, and background but with students that might see the world from another perspective. Building this multi-cultural team will enhance cross-cultural collaboration, and problem-solving.
Experience specific learning objective: This class will involve interacting with people that see the world differently in terms of culture, environment, politics, engineering design, manufacturing, etc. It involves building a multi-cultural team to solve an engineering problem. Good interpersonal communication is key for success, above all, respecting each other’s perspectives and cultures.
Core Learning Objective:
Working with Diverse Teams.
As mentioned before, this course involves building and working in a multi-cultural team to design and present an engineering solution.
Global Citizenship.
In order to do well in this class, self-awareness of being a citizen of this world is important. To understand that there are great challenges facing our world that need attention.
